NVIDIA: No Support for PCIe 3.0 on X79 with GTX 670/680
After three months of “certification” – NVIDIA has finally come out and said they will simply not support PCIe 3.0 on Intel’s flagship enthusiast platform: X79. In that same post – they did offer a PCIe 3.0 “enablement” tool – but it’s simply an “official” version of the registry hack that was posted in the originally NVIDIA forums thread demanding PCIe 3.0 on X79.
For me, personally, it means I’m leaving X79 to go to Z77. Ivy Bridge features native PCIe 3.0 and with quad-SLI 680s (soon to be 4GB units) I’m not going to sacrifice all of that bandwidth. I can give up CPU (for gaming) – I can’t afford to give up the bandwidth. My Rampage IV Extreme with 3960x gets extremely unstable if I use the PCIe 3.0 registry hack. It’s a bummer…but I’m also excited to build another new PC. 🙂
EDIT: [08/13/12] Slight update…since NVIDIA’s forums have been taken down (they were apparently hacked) some of the above links do not work. Try this link for more information. Also – I got this to work on my ASUS Rampage IV Extreme board. It took an updated BIOS and running it with SLI disabled and only one monitor. If you try to run it otherwise you can run into problems. It has worked flawlessly for weeks now.
